It’s not just for coffee snobs, but for everyone who loves coffee—a French press creates coffee in its purest form. Using pressure, the French press forces coffee into its pot after brewing, creating a cup of coffee with deeper, more concentrated flavors. Automatic coffee makers get the job done, but since coffee is filtered through paper liners, the machines can become sticky with buildup over time, and the finished product is not as high of quality as the best French press coffee maker can offer.
Making a cup of coffee with a French press is actually quite simple. Pour coarse grounds into the press, then pour in very hot water (nearly boiling), wait a few minutes, then press your coffee and it’s ready to drink! The result is a cup of coffee that is not contaminated with residue from a machine or oils from a filter or plastic parts, but is simply a robust, pure cup of coffee.

Why Should You Trust Us to Help You Find the Best French Press Coffee Maker?
We have spent extensive time conducting thorough research on and testing this product so you don’t have to. Experienced in product reviews, we have spent four years reporting for this website and have carefully considered 40 French press coffee makers. We spent a full week testing 21 French press coffee makers with community-based usage and personally tested nearly every product ourselves. We examined each product for types of building materials used, size of the coffee maker, weight, shape of item, care instructions, additional features, warranty policies, variety in usage features, and customer reviews and ratings. Our aim is to arm our customers with information to help you select the best French Press coffee maker, and not to promote any particular brand or product.
With this aim in mind and carefully reviewing the most important features of each product, we present to you the top 10 French press coffee makers and ultimately the best French press coffee maker.
Why Should You Get a French Press Coffee Maker?
Much simpler than a programmable automatic coffee maker, a French press coffee maker is as simple as pouring coffee grounds into a pot and then covering the grounds with hot water. No buttons to fuss with, no timers to set, and no manual to go through—it really is that simple. With a top-class French press coffee maker, you can enjoy any type of coffee anytime you want.
Despite its elegant sounding name, the French press coffee maker is budget friendly and affordable for any household. A quality French press will usually only cost between $17 and $30, with many options falling around the $20 mark.
French press coffee makers are portable and convenient. While an automatic coffee maker must be plugged in at all times and therefore is confined to an area with easily accessible outlets, the French press can simply be packed up and taken anywhere on the go. This makes this item versatile enough to handle trips to the office, out of town, a friend’s house, or even camping.
Better Temperature Control
The French press coffee maker also boasts better temperature control than a standard drip or automatic coffee maker. The reason for this is that the water is heated separately from the coffee beans, allowing you to heat your water to exactly your preferred temperature and not to add it to your grounds until you believe the temperature to be perfect. Most standard coffee makers heat their coffee beans to the same temperature every time regardless of the type of coffee beans being used or the user’s preference. Different coffee beans require different levels of heat, so the French Press will also allow for more flavorful and precise coffee making.
Doesn’t Need a Coffee Filter
One of the best features of the French Press is that no paper filter is needed! This means no more skipping your morning coffee because you are out of filters. Coffee without a filter also results in a purer, bolder cup of coffee that is free from dust, debris and other contaminants by paper filters that can actually alter the taste of your coffee. Paper filters also create more clean up afterwards and can be difficult and messy.
The French Press includes another convenient feature that you will not find with any automatic coffee maker: you can just toss it in the dishwasher! This makes clean up simpler, faster, and more sanitary.
Easy to Clean
French press coffee makers require very simple clean up. The machine usually only includes a glass cylinder and a few removable parts, making washing them a quick and easy task. Automatic coffee makers can often be very difficult to clean and because of their electrical cords, they cannot be easily washed in a sink.
What to Consider to Get the Best French Press Coffee Maker?
French Press coffee makers are inexpensive and often cost much less than an automatic coffee maker. Many quality models can be purchased for around $20, making the French Press a great gift option as well.
French Press coffee makers consist of three main parts that should be considered when deciding which model to purchase: a carafe, lid, and plunger. Carafes hold the water and the coffee grounds; they are made of tempered glass, stainless steel, or plastic. The plunger piece is made of three smaller parts: a handle, a plunger, and a filter. Some filter edges are made from plastic while others are constructed of metal. The lid of the press is constructed so that it doesn’t allow heat to escape from the press.
Type of Filters
There are some variations in filters for the French Press Coffee Maker. The filter is a permanent piece of the press, not something that is changed or disposed of like when using an automatic coffee maker. However, the filter type may have an effect on which press you purchase based on the features of each. Some French Press coffee makers include a four level filtration system, some use a 3 piece stainless steel filter, while still others use a mesh steel filter.
The capacity of the carafe in your French Press will determine how many cups of coffee your French Press makes at one time. Most carafes come in one of three common sizes: a three-cup size, eight cup, or 12-cup press.
The French Press coffee maker may very well be your kitchen’s easiest to clean appliance. Clean up is easier, faster and much more thorough than with a standard coffee maker. Simply take apart the coffee maker and hand wash each piece in hot, soapy water or put the pieces in the dishwasher (provided you have purchased a dishwasher safe model). Each piece comes apart easily and washes out quickly.
French Press coffee makers come in a variety of sizes. The most common size is 34 ounces (or one liter), though there are some smaller models which come in a 12 ounce or 15 ounce size.
When choosing the best French Press coffee maker, be sure you are choosing a model with a great warranty. Some models come with a limited one-year warranty, while others come with a 5-year warranty, and there are even some models that come with a lifetime replacement guarantee. In order to get your money’s worth and be sure you are purchasing a product that will last you for years to come, be sure you are protecting your purchase by choosing a model with an exceptional warranty policy.
How to Get the Best out of Your French Press Coffee Maker?
Grind your Coffee
To get the best results from your newly purchased French Press, you must properly grind your coffee beans. The most important factor here is to use freshly ground coffee beans. It really does make all the difference if your beans are freshly ground, and you will actually be able to taste the difference. If possible, wait until you are ready to press your coffee to grind it. Grind your coffee beans to a medium or coarse grind, most likely at the coarsest setting of your grinder. Consider using a burr grinder rather than a blade grinder to ensure a more consistent grind. Use a ration of 60 grams of coffee per liter of water.
Pre-heat your Press
Boil your water for your French Press (this is a great step to work on while you are grinding your coffee beans!) and then use it to pre-heat your press. Pour a little of your freshly boiled water into the press to pre-heat it. Heat will dissipate as you brew, so following this pre-heating step will allow for a more consistent temperature throughout the process.
Don’t Pour Boiling Water on Your Coffee
You don’t want to pour boiling water directly onto your coffee as you can scald your coffee beans and ruin the taste. Wait a minute or two after boiling your water to let it slightly cool before using it. If you have a good thermometer to use, try to allow your boiling water to cool to approximately 200 degrees F or 93 degrees C.
Use Freshly Ground Coffee from Whole Beans
In order to use your new French Press successfully, you will need to purchase your coffee beans whole. Purchasing them already ground will lose some of the flavor and your coffee won’t taste as fresh. As mentioned above, grind your coffee beans yourself to a coarse setting, and ideally grind them right before using them. Grinding your beans too far ahead of time will allow the flavor to dissipate and your coffee won’t taste as fresh or bold.
Don’t Brew for a Long Time
After putting your freshly ground coffee into the press and then pouring over your hot water, set a timer for four minutes. If you allow your coffee to brew longer, it may turn bitter. If you brew too short of a time, your coffee may taste acidic. To get the best cup of coffee from your press, set a timer so you don’t lose track of time and ruin your coffee.

Cafe Du Chateau French Press Review
Cafe Du Chateau French Press, 4 Level Filtration System, 304 Grade Stainless Steel, Heat Resistant Borosilicate Glass (1000ml)
The Café Du Chateau French Press is our top choice in French presses because it is hands down the best French press coffee maker out there. It has several unique features that other French Press coffee makers do not have, plus it’s affordable! Let’s take a closer look at some of its remarkable features.
The most unique feature of the Café Du Chateau is its 4 level filtration system. It is the only French press on the market with a 4 level system. Unlike low quality presses, which may leave coffee grounds in your finished cup of coffee, the Café Du Chateau model contains double stainless steel screen filters on its plunger. The plunger is further reinforced by a spring loaded base plate, which completely seals all edges. A high quality top lid strainer tops it all off, resulting in the purest brew.
Another reason the Café Du Chateau French Press is the best French Press coffee maker out there is because of the high quality of materials used in its construction. Every metal piece included in the press is 304-grade stainless steel, eliminating any risk of rust and giving it a beautiful shine. The carafe is made of heat resistant borosilicate glass, which is tough enough to withstand boiling water. All materials used are BPA free with certified lab tests to back up these claims.
The carafe is large enough to brew a good amount of coffee, but the French Press itself is small and portable. It can easily travel and be taken on the go in a small suitcase or travel backpack, making it versatile enough for a trip to the office or for your next outdoor excursion.
Your purchase of the Café Du Chateau French Press will come with detailed instructions for using your new French Press, ensuring you are able to make the perfect cup of coffee every single time even if you are new to the world of French Press coffee makers.
One of the best features of this French Press is that it is easily affordable, with a sticker price below the $20 mark. You cannot beat this price when considering the value and amazing features of this particular coffee maker.
Another sensational feature of the Café Du Chateau that you will not find with other French Press coffee makers is that it comes with a lifetime replacement guarantee! How many appliances in your kitchen can make this claim? If anything happens to your original Café Du Chateau, the company will send you a replacement for free!
- Affordable price

With its price under $30, it also received great ratings—its first 10 ratings in 6 days, second set of 10 ratings in 7 days and third set of 10 ratings in 4 days.
Kitchen Supreme French Press Coffee & Tea Make Review:

The Kitchen Supreme French Press Coffee & Tea Maker contains a unique 4 screen system to eliminate any chance of grounds ending up in your coffee cup, plus it includes a stainless steel spoon and a coffee/tea scoop for easy use.

Why is it our 2nd Runner up Pick??
In our research report you can see this French press coffee maker has many great features, though not quite as much as our Top Pick. With a generous 34oz capacity, durable stainless steel frame and screens (and 2 bonus ones included), and the same nearly indestructible borosilicate construction as our Top Pick, this carafe will easily handle the job. Moderately priced, this model brought in 30 consumer ratings in only twenty days.
8-Cup French Press for Coffee and Tea Maker Review
I am in love with this product since it does everything I need in a coffee maker, and though a little high for a French press, the less-than 30 bucks with tax I spent on it is less than the more common automatic machines that make inferior coffee.
I don’t know about your house, but we can be a little rough on things around here. Dogs chasing cats; cats jumping on the counter to get away; stuff flying everywhere. This is a common occurrence in these parts. Glass has never been safe unless very well protected, i.e. hidden or blocked completely from such traffic, and from use.
What this French press accomplishes in this regard is that it survives! As of yet, the zoo we live in here has not managed to destroy this coffee maker. The heat-treated special glass is extremely durable, not just in its resistance to flame, but also its refusal to shatter, though my pets seem keen on doing so.
The design of this French press, unlike many similar products, actually includes TWO screens. Two screens are much better than one at keeping your coffee clear of grounds. The bonus is, they give you an extra set when you buy it. This is a wonderful thing since a replacement pair runs about as much as the entire coffee maker.
When you’ve gone through the 2 sets of screen included in this product, don’t buy the replacements, buy another coffee pot. The replacement screens are about 25 bucks, and the machine with 2 pairs of them is under thirty. It’s much more efficient at that point to buy a whole new French press and get two more sets for about the same cost.
Now to its function. I love that I can see exactly where the screens are so I can stop the decanting process just before the unavoidable coffee-silt sitting on it goes into my drink. This is something that most models of this type of coffee brewer get wrong. Nine times out of ten, the screen is obscured by some decoration or steel band. Not the case here.
Also, I’m enthralled with how tight of a seal everything makes. Some French presses can be a little…wobbly we’ll say. A nice seal everywhere keeps heat and steam inside where it belongs, helps with the sludge from your grounds that can seep around gaps into your coffee, and it greatly decreases wear and tear on the materials, increasing this coffee pot’s lifespan.
- Shatterproof glass
- Attractive but unintrusive stainless steel frame
- Tight construction
- Durable screens made of stainless steel
- Uses two screens instead of one
- Replacement screens are expensive, but this can be remedied by replacing the entire thing
Why is it our budget pick?
Through our extensive research, we found this product to have the most features in this price range. Despite its very low price, it still boasts a 32-ounce shatterproof glass carafe, heat resistant plastic, and a stainless steel filter. Regarding rating frequency, it received its first 10 ratings in 69 days, its second set of 10 ratings in 55 days, and third set of 10 ratings in 67 days.
Primula 6-Cup Tempo Coffee Press Review
If budget is an obstacle in purchasing either of our top two choices, then the Primula 6-Cup Tempo Coffee Press is the product for you! It is very affordable but still boasts some outstanding features.
The most noteworthy feature is its price, which is under $12, making it the best French press coffee maker to gift anyone.
One great feature of the Primula 6-Cup Tempo Coffee Press is that all of its metal parts are stainless steel, including the filter. The carafe is made of shatterproof glass, a feature uncommon in this price range.
The 32-ounce borosilicate glass beaker is dishwasher safe, making clean up easy and quick. Its lid is carefully designed and fits snugly to be sure there are no gaps, which results in a better cup of coffee and faster clean up.
Its ergonomic handle is also heat-resistant, making handling it easy and pouring your cup of coffee a safe task. Its overall design is elegant and modern, making it a great design choice for your kitchen.
- stainless steel parts
- elegant design features including heat resistant, ergonomic handle
- carafe is dishwasher safe
- no warranty
- filtration system isn’t as advanced as other models

Care and Maintenance
In order to make your French Press coffee maker last longer, it is necessary to properly care for it. Also, if you want to keep each cup of coffee tasting as bold and fresh as when you first purchased your press, proper maintenance of your coffee maker is needed. Without proper care, residue can built up in your coffee maker, compromising the taste of your coffee.
1. Clean the filters
Disassemble your coffee maker and remove the filters for proper cleaning. In order to thoroughly clean your coffee maker, you must remove the various parts, including filters. Check your user manual or instructions if you are unsure of how to safely remove the filters for cleaning. Coffee grounds that are left to sit in your filter will release oils that will start to contaminate your parts if left unattended.
2. Use white vinegar for a deep clean
In order to get a deep clean of your coffee maker and ensure you are not left with residue or grounds that will taint future cups of coffee, use vinegar to clean the parts of your coffee maker. After disassembling the pieces and giving a quick rinse, soak the various parts in white vinegar. You can even use a little baking soda to scrub the parts to get a thorough cleaning.
Another great way to clean your coffee maker is to pour vinegar into the coffee maker enough to cover the compression parts of the machine. Move the plunger up and down to be sure you are getting all areas cleaned. After using the vinegar, rinse thoroughly to be sure no vinegar is left in the coffee maker.
3. Clean it in hot water and soak
Disassemble your coffee maker and soak the various parts in hot water. If your coffee maker is dishwasher safe, you may also put the pieces in the dishwasher to be cleaned. If you do, take care to put items in carefully to prevent any breakage in the dishwasher. If you are washing parts by hand, use very hot water. Before trying to scrub, allow the pieces to soak for a while to allow all grounds and residue to soak off.
4. Use a soft brush to clean the carafe gently
Take care to clean your carafe gently to avoid any chance of scratching the finish or breaking something. Use a soft brush that will allow you to get in all nooks and crannies of the carafe. After soaking the carafe in hot water, brush gently to clean the carafe.
5. Remove coffee grounds regularly
Try to avoid letting your coffee grounds sit in your coffee maker all day or even day to day. Allowing the coffee grounds to just sit in your machine can start to wreak havoc on your brand new machine. Coffee actually has quite a bit of oil in it and the longer the grounds sit, the more residue and oils are released into the coffee maker. These oils can begin to destroy the finish or break down parts if not properly attended to.
